This year has gone by so fast, a lot of things happened on a personal level, so I haven’t had much to say publicly in general or about politics.  Besides I need to make sure my passport gets renewed……

You can always go to Peter Kaukonen’s site and read his editorials…..he says it all.

City fights to protect its heritage against US base expansion

“The giant tourist signs as you enter this historic North Italian city read: “Welcome to Vicenza, City of Palladio, listed by Unesco.” Underneath in the same distinctive brown lettering is an addition: “And sold by our politicians to the US Army.” It was put there by local residents campaigning against the expansion of the nearby US military base..

Palladio’s architectural style and designs were the model for Thomas Jefferson’s Montecello and many of the U.S. Government buildings constructed in Washington, D.C. (The U.S. Capitol Bldg. for starters)

It came to light that the planned expansion would being done as a “Nato” project so that no Environmental Impact Studies would be required which would have taken up too much time, and  it would give the citizens of Vicenza time to mobilize and stop the project.

Well, the citizens of Vicenza have successfully mobilized to stop the expansion for the last several years after finding out about it after the fact.

Hey, how about a foreign military base in the middle of historic D.C. ?

I say way to go U.S.A. for alienating the citizens of a country that not only have been loyal allies,  but really like Americans.  (notice I said citizens and not government—big difference).

the following in English is from the website of  U.S. Citizens for Peace and Justice  Rome, Italy

See below an appeal from citizens' committees in the city of Vicenza, Italy, where the U.S. military is pushing for yet another base.

In the city of Vicenza, Italy, there are plans to build yet another U.S. military base.

The entire affair has been conducted in a disgraceful manner. The request was initiated by Vicenza Mayor Hullweck and City Council member Cicero, in cooperation with the previous Berlusconi government, without ever informing the citizens of Vicenza nor was it discussed in City Council (and has yet to be discussed!). In May 2006, news of the plans started to leak out and concerned citizens began to act.  ( *Note from LAuren:  since this was written the Berlusconi government returned.  The citizens of Vicenza recalled the entire city council, held new elections, and put the base expansion proposal up for popular vote.  The citizens of Vicenza overwhelmingly voted NO.   But, it’s not over with.  The Berlusconi government is still giving the U.S. the go ahead.)

The citizens of Vicenza are strongly opposed to the construction of the new base for the following reasons:

1) Militarization of the city. Vicenza is currently home to various bases and housing facilities for the U.S. military (Camp Ederle, the bases of Longare and Tormeno, a residential village and various depots and warehouses throughout the city) not to mention headquarters for the European Gendarmerie. All this in a city of 110,000 inhabitants. The construction of a new base would make the city of Vicenza the largest U.S. Military base in Europe. This is in contrast with the rest of Italy and Europe, where the U.S. military presence is diminishing.

2) Protection of our territory. The area in question for the construction of the base is a vast green area completely surrounded by the city. Some houses will be no more than 30 meters from the base! Currently, the area includes a small civilian airport, a flying club, and the only rugby fields in the city.

3) Urban impact. In total, approximately 600,000 cubic meters would be built, the equivalent of 1900 apartments of 100 m2 each, adding more construction to an already heavily developed city lacking green areas.

4) Social impact. The new base would accommodate 2000 additional soldiers along with their families as well as civilian employees of the base. This would bring in an additional 15,000 people to a city of 110,000 inhabitants!

5) Economic impact. Italian taxpayers cover 37% of the operating costs for U.S. military bases in Italy, amounting to hundreds of millions of Euro per year. Another base would increase this figure.

6) Security issues. The soldiers housed at the new base would be part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade (some of which are already lodged at Camp Ederle) and are currently stationed in Germany. The 173rd is an airborne rapid response force. They were the first to parachute into Iraq at the start of the war. The presence of these troops creates problems of security for the city; both as a possible target for terrorist attacks as well as problems associated with soldiers returning from war zones. In this regard, the city of Vicenza has already experienced problems with fights and brawls as well as cases of rape concerning soldiers returning from Iraq.

7) Acoustic and environmental impact due to the military vehicles and aircraft used at the base.

We believe that the future of our city (one of the most productive in Italy) should be aimed at development of the local economy, employment and research, not towards further militarization.

The construction of a new military base would be a serious loss for the entire city, and, we believe, for Italy as well.

For a debtor nation, I’m wondering where is the U.S.  getting the money from ?????

Well known American Historian Howard Zinn filmed a video that was aired at a gathering last December in Vicenza, Italy to protest the expansion of the American Military Base located there.  See my links page to see the video.

I have A LOT  to say in support of the people of Vicenza…………so it will be posted later.

It’s an important issue that is not getting any press in the U.S. (and it should be)

2007  Summarized

September, 2007

A friend of mine passed away last January.  It was her wish that there be no memorial service.  So, a group of her friends of many years organized a “gathering” in her favorite park.

“Saturday September 1, 2007 - Roxbury Memorial Park in Beverly Hills, California. Family and friends gather to pay tribute to Marcheline. In attendance were sister Debbie Martin with husband Ron and son Corey. Also paying their respects were brother Rolland Bertrand with son Francis, Jon Voight, John Trudell, Lauren Taines, Belinia Beatty, Jade Dixon with daughter Barbie, Cis Rundele, and Bill Day.

“Marche” and John Trudell formed an organization called Give Love Give Life &  Jade Dixon has joined in to help carry on with Marcheline’s vision.

Clinton Wants 'Clean Sweep' After Bush

Posted: 2007-06-30 14:49:04

MIAMI (June 29) - "A clean sweep" is needed at the White House because President Bush has fostered "a culture of cronyism, corruption and incompetence," Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday”

Well, in my interview with Holding Together Magazine in May, I said I call the speeches the U.S. politicians give “dramatic readings”just  to get elected.  This particular quote from “Hillary” made me laugh so much that I decided to post it.  Hey, I remember at her last go around with “their” Presidency…………promises of National Health Insurance, pushing through NAFTA and the oursourcing of American jobs, the “cronyism”, the “blue dress” that she wasn’t wearing in the Oval Office, illegal campaign donations coming from China to a Chinese Laundry in Little Rock………

So LAuren can only say …………..LOOK WHO’S TALKING!!!!!   Other issues aside….can you think of any better place to wash illegal campaign donations from Mainland China then a Chinese Laundry in Little Rock, Arkansas?

………………The people of Vicenza, Italy have successfully mobilized  to prevent the expansion of a U.S. Air force base (left over from WWII) that would ruin the vibe of a city known for it’s classic art and architecture.   More on this in 2008 as this movement to stop the base is snowballing.

Now Mr. Chrysler himself has written a book…..I could say well, he’s twenty years late and a billion dollars short, but I do respect people when they acknowledge they were wrong.. so here’s to Lee Iacocca for taking a stand and writing about it !!

A few excerpts:

Iacocca: Where Have All the Leaders Gone?
American Empire | Books
by Lee Iacocca with Catherine Whitney

”Had Enough? Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car.

But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course." Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I'll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out! You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up.

There is no doubt that you are doing a better job than the misguided republicans but if you don't impeach that murderous idiot than you have no balls.

Please share this with your counterparts.

Republican minority has be able to override the Democratic majority in Congress.   Makes no sense to me.

In the late 1980’s I wanted to understand why the Islamic Countries were so resentful of the U.S.  I took an  upper level history course at Cal. State University, Northridge  called the History of the Rise of Islam through modern times.    A must read for all citizens of  the U.S.A.  to understand “why”.

“ the right that controls all other rights is the right to get information. If you don't have this, the others don't matter. The Bill of Rights doesn't work if you can't find out what's going on.”

Anyone notice that while President Bush gave his speech last  week about what he “planned” to do temporarily in Iraq………………it was already a done deal?  The troops were already on their way.   The moral of the story…….one must have a sense of humor towards politics or it can get real depressing.

Like I said in 2006…………..if the Democrats win back control of Congress…it’s not going to make any difference.

Brings to mind some Jagger & Richards lyrics:

“As heads is tails just call them Lucifer and they’re in need of some restraint”

January 4, 2007

I read the most beautiful book over the holidays called “Me and a Guy Named Elvis”.   It is written by Jerry Schilling who was 12 when he first met Elvis and then became part of the infamous “Memphis Mafia”.  Elvis was before my time but that didn’t matter.  I was left with a profound understanding of  how the bond of friendship never leaves, even if one friend passes.  I recommend this book to everyone.

Jerry told me that he titled it that way because when he was growing up everyone used to ask him “what’s that guy’s name that you’re friends with?”

Summary of  YEAR, 2006

Italy won the World Cup.. Brava ITALIA!!!

My CD ”Hideout Is A Crook’s Best Friend” was a labor of love.  It’s been getting great reviews and I thank everyone for all the orders and emails.   I’m so pleased that people are diggin on the music.  My favorite Live Show in 2006 was the Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip.

The U.S. government ended Habeas Corpus in the United States with the passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006.  It also ended individual State’s rights and allows the federal government to send out the military against the civilian population (previously illegal) with the passage of the John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007

My favorite quote:

“The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either”

Benjamin Franklin

Michigan Congressman John Conyers filed a lawsuit in a Michigan Federal District Court

Conyers vs. Bush

The invasion of Iraq in 2003 was supposed to be temporary.   Then again why would the U.S. have spent all the time energy and money on building 55“temporary” land bases, which according to Donald Rumsfeld are permanent bases.

President George Bush gave a speech from Hanoi in a blue dress; sorry I meant a blue robe.
